BIOMIMICRY CHALLENGE
Winning project of the Biomimicry contest
Contest name:Biomimicry Challenge
Scope: International - proposals from around the world
Position: Finalist, winning proposal
Name of the team: Archiloop research
DELIVERABLE
The final deliverable of the contest was a 3-minute video in English where the project was explained in a synthetic way. In this QR is that final video.
WHAT IS BIOMIMESIS?
Biomimicry is a projection methodology based on recognizing nature as a mentor. Use natural systems and methods as inspiration to solve current problems.
REWARD
Aside from financial compensation, the US-based Institute for Biomimicry created “Lauchpad”, with a duration of 10 weeks. A course to promote and know how to carry out the ventures created for the contest

BRICK DESIGN BASED ON THE BEETLES OF THE TROPICAL DRY FOREST TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE
Compressed earth brick, which mimics the qualities of the hardened wings of the beetles called “elytra” to control the internal temperature of the body. It is a construction system that adapts to theneeds, the resources, and the culture of La Guajira, using sand as the main material and manure as a compactor as it is used today

PROCESSbiomimetic
GUAJIRA COLOMBIA
La Guajira is a Colombian department with a coast towards the Caribbean Sea. It is a very hot area where the inhabitants do not have the resources to isolate themselves from the temperature and live in poverty.

INSU-RAM was born as the solution to this problem that occurs in the north of the country, to helpcommunities enteras to find a better way of living through inspiration in nature.
For the creation of the brick we were inspired by beetles, mainly one from the Tropical Dry Forest, the Klinidium Kirby, which through a process of sclerification of thecells of the shell are capable of isolating the outside temperature from the inside, allowing air to pass inside their shell, this was the process that we replicated for the design of the brick.
THE IDEA

HOW DO IT?
MATERIALS
Initially it is thought that the brick should be made with materials that can be found in the area, such as sand. We are inspired by a technique from the area to carry out compaction, or use manure as a compacting material.

CINVA-RAM
INSU-RAM was born as the solution to this problem that occurs in the north of the country, to helpcommunities enteras to find a better way of living through inspiration in nature.
For the creation of the brick we were inspired by beetles, mainly one from the Tropical Dry Forest, the Klinidium Kirby, which through a process of sclerification of thecells of the shell are capable of isolating the outside temperature from the inside, allowing air to pass inside their shell, this was the process that we replicated for the design of the brick.

OPERATION OF THE BRICK
GEOMETRY
The final brick has a pattern of holes at the top that run through the entire piece, these holes goincreasing its size inwards, in this way like beetle cellsachieve the correct air passage for internal temperature conservation
OUTER LAYER
The outer shell is also inspired by the texture of the shell of thebeetles. This helps to increase the contact surface with the sun, reducing direct contact with the brick.
PROVISION
The holes are precisely arranged so that there is vertical continuity.

FINAL PROPOSAL FOR THE LAUNCH PAD
INSU-RAM 2.0
To conclude the development of the launchpad, an "INSU-RAM 2.0" was developed. In which different characteristics, both formal and functional, were corrected and an action plan was drawn up for the execution of brick as a patent, and through this to create a company constituted by the group of architects who won the contest.
